RAM, or physical memory, temporarily stores all the data needed to run your website. If this memory reaches its limit, you may encounter 502/503/504 errors. Several factors can cause high RAM usage, such as a poorly optimized site, heavy themes or plugins, high traffic, or DDoS attacks.

When CPU or RAM usage hits 100%, it means your website is using all available resources, which can slow down your site significantly and even cause it to time out. High resource usage can also affect other users on the server, leading to excessive server loads.

Checking Your Website’s Resource Usage in cPanel

cPanel includes a feature that shows the statistics of your website’s resource usage, including CPU usage, physical memory (RAM) usage, entry processes, faults, and I/O usage over time.

If you exceed your CPU, memory, or entry process limits within 24 hours, you’ll see a message: “Your account has been limited in the past 24 hours.” Click “Details” for an overview of what was limited, along with graphs that visually represent resource usage. Investigate and resolve any code or caching issues to prevent your site from shutting down.

Viewing CPU Usage in cPanel

To check CPU and RAM usage:

  1. Login to cPanel.
  2. For a quick view: Scroll to the right-hand sidebar until you see CPU Usage.
  3. For detailed information: Scroll down to the Metrics section and click “Use of resources.”
  4. Resource Usage Overview: Click on “Details” to see statistical charts of detailed resource usage.
  5. Usage Periods: View usage for the current day, week, or month to get a detailed report. The Usage Report section shows how stable CPU/RAM usage was over the specified time frame.
  6. Optimization: Based on the data, optimize or upgrade your website as needed.

Steps to Take When You Exceed Your Resources

If your resource usage exceeds your package limits, you can take the following steps:

  1. Review and Update: Upgrade all plugins, modules, or themes to their latest versions.
  2. Optimize: Contact your web developer to optimize your website.

If these steps don’t reduce resource usage, you may need to upgrade your hosting package. Contact support for assistance.

Importance of Monitoring Server Resources

Regularly monitor your website’s resource usage to know when optimization or upgrades are necessary. An optimized website loads faster and performs better. If you consistently exceed CPU and RAM limits, you may receive warning emails or face temporary suspension, depending on the severity of the usage.
